Tragedy struck in Delta state on Wednesday, July 22, as a tanker laden with petroleum product exploded around Koko Junction section of the Benin/Saepele Expressway in Ethiope LGA.
The ugly incident claimed the lives of at least 20 persons who were reportedly burnt to death, according to a report by Daily Trust.
Citing sources whose names were not revealed, the newspaper stated that the incident occurred around 11am.
Legit.ng gathers that the incident also left several vehicles on the road trapped and burnt. An eyewitness said she was headed to Sapele from Benin when the Nissan Quest car she drove with other passengers was locked down in the heavy gridlock the incident precipitated on the road.
“The explosion was very devastating, many people were trapped in several vehicles in the inferno.
“At least, 10 passenger vehicles were burnt and no fewer than 20 charred bodies were removed from the vehicles.
“We were lucky because we got there when firefighters were already battling the fire.
“Many people were trapped inside the vehicles and it was difficult to rescue them because the fire was really huge,” the eyewitness said.
The officials of Federal Road Safety Corp (FRSC) were reportedly battling the fire and rescuing victims as of 3pm.

Dubai: Dubai Police received nearly 2.5 million calls on its emergency number in the second quarter of this year with 97 per cent of the calls being answered within 10 seconds, Dubai Police call centre revealed on Wednesday.
The centre received 397,122 calls on the non-emergency number 901 during the second quarter of the year, compared to 218,051 calls in the second quarter of last year.

Mr. Noel Donjur, the Chief of Staff to the Plateau State Governor, is also in an isolation centre after testing positive.
However, Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State, who had been in self- isolation after testing positive, has now recovered and tested negative.
Governors Nasir el-Rufai (Kaduna), Seyi Makinde (Oyo) and Bala Mohammed (Bauchi) had at different times contracted the virus before they got healed.
But President Muhammadu Buhari’s first Chief of Staff, Mallam Abba Kyari was not that lucky. He died of complications arising from Covid-19 on April 18.
There are also speculations that Mallam Babagana Wakil, the Chief of Staff to the Borno State Governor, who died on July 1, might have contracted the virus.
Confirming the health status of Governor Umahi yesterday, Ebonyi State Commissioner of Information, Uchenna Orji, said his principal was asymptotic and has since isolated himself in line with Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) protocols.
The Governor handed over the running of the state to his Deputy, Kelechi Igwe to “take over the frontline coordination of our fight against Coronavirus pandemic to protect our people from the scourge of the virus.”
Umahi said some of his close aides similarly tested positive for the virus after undertaking the test.
He did not reveal the identities of those who tested positive.
The governor appealed to residents in the state to take preventive measures.
He added that he was working from home and would conduct all meetings virtually.

President Donald Trump said Monday that there would be very few cases of coronavirus if the US stopped its testing and contact tracing.null
“If we stop testing right now, we’d have very few cases, actually,” the president said during a roundtable event for seniors.
This isn’t the first time Trump has remarked on how less testing would result in fewer publicly reported cases.
“So the media likes to say we have the most cases, but we do, by far, the most testing. If we did very little testing, we wouldn’t have the most cases. So, in a way, by doing all of this testing, we make ourselves look bad,” Trump said during a meeting with Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds last month.
“For instance, they would say we have more than China. I don’t think so. We have more than other countries. I don’t think so. But by doing all of the testing … we’re going to have more cases because we do more testing. Otherwise, you don’t know if you have a case. I think that’s a correct statement,” Trump added.
The president expressed a similar sentiment in March, telling Fox News that he didn’t want infected patients from a cruise ship to disembark because it would increase the number of reported cases in the US.

Scientists in Nigerian universities under the aegis of COVID-19 Research Group yesterday announced the discovery of a vaccine for the prevention of COVID-19.
Addressing a news conference at Adeleke University in Ede, Osun State, Dr Oladipo Kolawole, leader of the team, said the vaccine was being developed locally in Africa for Africans.
Kolawole, a specialist in Medical Virology, Immunology and Bioinformatics at Adeleke University however said the vaccine would also work for other continent when unveiled.
He said the study, which led to the discovery of the vaccine, had enjoyed initial funding by the Trinity Immunodeficient Laboratory and Helix Biogen Consult, Ogbomosho, to the tune of about N7.8 million.
Kolawole said the group had been working extensively by exploring the SARS-CoV-2 genome from African countries to select the best possible potential vaccine candidates.
He said after trying out some selected processes of vaccine development, the researchers had been able to choose the best potential vaccine candidates for the SARS-CoV-2 and had made the possible latent vaccine constructs.
On how soon the unnamed vaccine would be unveiled to the public, Kolawole said that it would take a minimum of 18 months.
According to him, this is because a lot of analysis and studies as well as approvals by medical authorities were still required.
Also, Prof Solomon Adebola, acting vice-chancellor of the university, said the university was poised to assist in the funding of the research with a view to bringing the vaccine to limelight.
He stated: “We are glad that a vaccine that will provide solution to a global problem like Coronavirus pandemic is coming from the garden.
“It is our passion to be a solution provider to such a global pandemic, and we are ready to throw our weights behind the team and make the vaccine a reality”.
Commenting, Prof Julius Oloke, head, coordinating unit of the Research Group and Vice-Chancellor of Precious Cornerstone University, Ibadan, said the vaccine was real.
He said, “It’s a pleasure that we have come together to produce a vaccine at a time that the world is in need of solution to a ravaging pandemic. It’s a proof that we are working and not folding our hands or looking away from the problem.
“The vaccine is real. We have validated it severally. It is targeted at Africans, but will also work for other races. It will work. It cannot be faked. This is a result of determination. It took a lot of scientific efforts.
“The population of those that need vaccines is more than those that need drugs. That is why the research focused on vaccine.”
